Environmental degradation is getting increasingly worse in Egypt. Rapid population growth and urbanisation has caused a series of problems -- the biggest being non-biodegradable waste. A group of engineering students in Cairo has found one way to put waste products to good use -- and even turn a profit. This is the fifth of a ten part series of clips covering the rail traffic on the Kalbaskraal - Saldanha and Bitterfontein section. The section is mostly worked by 35 Class diesels of the 35-000 and 35-400 series. Designed by General Electric and manufactured in South Africa by Dorman Long Locomotive. Both sub classes belong to the same model GE U15C. The larger 34 class also makes an appearance in the series, mostly 34-082 and 34-083. These locomotives were also designed by General Electric and manufactured in South Africa. The majority of the filming was done at Rust, Moorreesburg, Koringberg, De Hoek, Klawer, Koperfontein and Hopefield. Western Cape, South Africa.

Since splitting up with Ford nearly 2 years ago, sales have been climbing and customers seem to be happy. The compact Mazda2 is selling well but does the top of the range automatic diesel version, the Hazumi, represent too much of a niche product? We spent a month with the car to find out. Two University students in Uganda are aiming to solve the energy problem in the country by producing fuel, from waste... The students are making diesel for engines from use of plastic rubbish. They use basic equipment for their project to heat plastics at high temperatures before cooling it to produce the diesel. Isabel Nakirya reports on this innovation.
In 1959 Karl Kling and Rainer Günzler triumphed in their Mercedes-Benz 190 diesel at the "Méditerranée - Le Cap" marathon rally. With a mere 37 KW and rear-wheel drive they were unstoppable in the race across the African continent! From Algeria to South Africa the route led them through steppe, desert sand and scree dunes. For the first time Mercedes-Benz.tv shows the film diary of one of the greatest motorsports adventures of all time.

In this video, we take a look at the circumstances surrounding the import of substandard petroleum into Africa from European Countries; the impact of the use of this fuel on the health and well being of populations in Africa; particularly West Africa; the efforts put forth by "Public Eye" as Swiss NGO and the cooperation of African Countries among themselves to establish changes in the standards of fuel allowed to be imported. We look at the growing populations, traffic congestion, political and health, implications, and how tougher regulations can and should be implemented. HEADPHONES/EARPHONES/SET OF SPEAKERS RECOMMENDED!This clip was taken outside Caledon, Western Cape South Africa, on a branch line, that connects farms, and grain silo's to the City of Cape Town or in other words, the electrified main line. Apparently, this line is used only 4 times daily some said only twice but earlier this year, unusually, We heard a train going out on that line at 3:50 in the morning! Locomotive and train details: It seems quite clear that these class 35-000's and their sub-classes, are not very powerful locomotives. They were built for light-duty freight services, and to climb the super steep gradients such as a 1 in 40! The older class 34-000's are by far more powerful, but they have been removed from the branch line and are now running on the Sishen-Saldahna OREX l...
